Russia attacks Ukraine overnight, injuring 5 in Odesa

Russian forces launched a series of attacks across Ukraine, targeting multiple oblasts with missiles and drones overnight into 9 October.

The Air Force of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reports that Russia fired three Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles at Poltava Oblast. Governor Pronin said that the attack damaged an industrial facility.

Ukrainian air defense also downed 21 out of 22 Russian drones over Odesa, Vinnytsia, and Kyiv oblasts.

Russian drone attack in the Odesa district injured five people, Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said. Three of them were hospitalized. The attack also damaged a nine-story building and a medical facility, while an unfinished construction site caught fire.

Kiper said Russians have been attacking Odesa with attack drones for the third night in a row.

In the Kherson Oblast, the Russian military reportedly struck a geriatric center, injuring two medical workers. The regional prosecutor’s office reported the Russian military shelled Stepanivka in the Kherson district with artillery weapons.

These attacks are part of a pattern of regular assaults by Russian forces on Ukrainian oblasts, using various weapons systems such as strike UAVs, missiles, guided bombs, and multiple-launch rocket systems.

The Ukrainian authorities and international organizations qualify these strikes as war crimes by Russia.

At least 11,743 civilians (including 613 children) were killed and 24,614 injured as a result of Russian aggression in Ukraine from 24 February 2022 to August 2024, according to the UN.

The UN reports that the actual figures may be higher, as some reports of civilian casualties have not yet been confirmed.
