A supporter of a united Ukraine in 2014, Nataliya Volkova has been appointed the head of the ruling "party" in occupied Donetsk instead of Denis Pushilin, one of the leaders of the so-called "Donetsk People's Republic" ("DNR"). However, it doesn't show the statelet's aspiration to peacefully return to Ukraine as it may seem. Russian-installed Donetsk ruler Aleksandr Zakharchenko merely continues to enhance his power over the territory, restraining the powers of his rivals.

Denis Kazansky, a popular pro-Ukrainian political blogger who fled Donetsk for Kyiv after the outbreak of conflict, believes that the Kremlin is behind all such appointments and replacing Pushilin by Volkova is a serious argument in favor of the fact that the Donetsk "republic" is being double-crossed by Russia. Meanwhile, Zakharchenko said that Denis Pushilin is going to top an "important branch of activity," namely "the integration of Donbas to the Russian Federation."
