“20 Days in Mariupol,” a documentary film by photojournalist and filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov, has been shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars Awards) in the Documentary Film and International Feature Film categories, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on 21 December.
“An AP team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggle to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. As the only international reporters who remain in the city, they capture what later become defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more,” the film’s official website reads.
The Russian army besieged Mariupol until May 2022, constantly bombarding residential areas and depriving the city’s residents of access to food and water. The city remains under Russian occupation, with Russian authorities attempting to conceal the actual number of Ukrainian civilians killed.
The film’s world premiere occurred at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section, where it received the Audience Award. Its Ukrainian premiere was at the Docudays UA festival in June 2023, winning both the main prize of the DOCU/UKRAINE competition and the Audience Award.
The nominees for the 96th Oscar Awards will be announced on 23 January 2024, with the award ceremony scheduled for 10 March 2024.
