Peace talks in London faltered after Ukraine refused to recognize Crimea as Russian. Zelenskyy reminded Trump of his own 2018 Crimea Declaration which affirmed that Washington does not and will not accept Russia’s claim to Crimea.

Trump currently sides with an advisor who claims Russia is "open to peace," while other advisors point to recent Russian missile attacks on civilians and unwavering demands to control four Ukrainian oblasts.
"Novorossiya is an integral part of Russia," Putin recently declared, with his spokesperson Dmitry Peskov defining the region as encompassing eastern and southern Ukraine including Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts—far beyond currently occupied territories.
"Without this, there cannot be a reliable peace with Russia," wrote relatives of the 298 people killed when flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine in 2014.
