Kyiv residents were suddenly awakened early on December 11, 2013 by the loud pealing of church bells. That night, Berkut troops stormed the Maidan in an attempt to clear the city centre of protestors and Maidan rallies.
The bells rang incessantly from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., urging people to go to the main square of the capital and support the protesters who were threatened by Yanukovych’s security forces. The bell ringer was Ivan Sydor, a 25-year-old Theological Academy graduate student and administrator of the official site of St. Michael’s Cathedral and Monastery. As morning dawned, other seminarians came to help Father Ivan. Ukraine’s capital had not heard or experienced anything like this in recent history. The first historical night alarm was mentioned in 1240 when Kyiv was surrounded by the Mongol horde.
