Russia continues offensives around Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, capturing parts of Ivanivske, attacking towards Chasiv Yar as immediate aim despite unlikely full-scale assault currently, the British Defense Ministry said in its March 7 intelligence update on Ukraine.
During the battles for Bakhmut from autumn 2022 to May 2023, Russian forces destroyed nearly the entire city, with 71% of the built-up areas demolished, including almost all kindergartens, schools, stadiums, and youth centers, as revealed by satellite imagery.
The Ministry tweeted:
- Russian forces have continued attacks intended to expand control around the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which Russia seized in May 2023. Its forces have advanced to occupy eastern parts of the village of Ivanivske and are attacking Ukrainian positions in Bohdanivka.
- On this axis, Russia's immediate operational objective is almost certainly to seize Chasiv Yar, located approximately 5km from the front line. Despite some gradual tactical gains, it is highly unlikely that Russian forces are currently able to attempt a full-scale assault on the town.
