Ukraine downs 9/15 explosive drones, two missiles during Russia’s latest air attack

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that overnight into 12 December 2023, the Russian forces again attacked Ukraine with Iranian-made Shahed-series one-way attack drones from the area of Balaklava in occupied Crimea.

“A total of 15 Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs were launched, nine of which were destroyed in different regions of Ukraine by units of mobile fire groups of the Defence Forces,” the Air Force’s report reads.

One of the airspace monitoring channels linked to the Ukrainian Air Defense forces, Nikolayevskyi Vanyok, noted that the weather conditions complicated the destruction of Russia’s explosive drones as it was foggy.

Also, on the evening of 11 December, anti-aircraft missile units belonging to the Vostok Air Command successfully intercepted and destroyed two Kh-59 guided missiles in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, the Air Force says.

In recent weeks, Russia has launched Shahed drone attacks every night, launching the drones across various regions of Ukraine, presumably in attempts to bypass Ukrainian air defenses and to trigger as many regional air raid alerts as possible, targeting various Ukrainian oblasts. The Ukrainian air defenders usually shoot down most of Shaheds during such attacks.
