Aidar soldier dies in U.S. after 15-month fight for life

Roman Lutsiuk from Lutsk (western Ukraine), Maidan activist and Aidar volunteer, passed away while he was being cared for at a Connecticut clinic.

After the Revolution of Dignity, Roman went to the Donbas to protect Ukraine. In July 2014, he was wounded in the arm, but returned to the front and joined the ranks of the Aidar Battalion; his nickname was “Lysy” (Baldy). In November 2014, Roman was seriously wounded in the abdomen near Shchastia, Luhansk Oblast. In order to save him, doctors working on the battlefield initially transfused the wrong blood type into his body, thus complicating further medical treatment.

Roman underwent six operations in two months at the Kyiv Military Hospital. Surgeons removed a portion of his small and large intestine. However, they were unable to repair the damage to his bowels and stomach. Roman was taken to the United States in January 2015. Doctors fought to save him, but Roman’s heart stopped beating.

Friends remember him as a good man and a true patriot.
