Russia orchestrating Donetsk “referendum”

Russia orchestrating Donetsk “referendum”

Alexander Barkashov

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense (SBU) has intercepted a phone conversation that points to Russia’s involvement in the organization of the so-called “referendum” with prearranged “results” for creating the “Donetsk People’s Republic,” the SBU press service reported Wednesday, May 7.

According to the SBU, particular evidence is provided by the recorded phone conversation between the leader of the radical organization “Russian Unity” Alexander Barkashov in Moscow and D. Boytsov, the leader of the unregistered organization “Orthodox Donbas,” in Donetsk.

In the conversation, Boytsov asks for Russian military support to successfully conduct the so-called referendum on May 11. However, Barkashov tells him he should forget about any voting for “federalization” and proceed with the vote for the “Donetsk People’s Republic.” Instead of worrying about useless “papers,” he should “simply fill in questionnaires” in a way that shows “that 100% are for.”
