Ukraine’s military said it struck a Russian oil depot, a radar station, and other targets as part of a campaign to weaken Russia’s ability to wage war, according to a statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kyiv has said such strikes are aimed at systematically reducing Russia’s military and economic capacity and disrupting logistics that support its operations against Ukraine.

Oil depot supplying Russian forces hit in Penza

The General Staff said Ukrainian forces hit the “Penzanefteprodukt” oil depot in Russia’s Penza Oblast. A fire was recorded at the site, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed. The facility is used to supply fuel to Russia’s occupying forces, the statement said.

The strike adds to a string of Ukrainian attacks on Russian fuel infrastructure in January. Earlier this month, Ukrainian drones hit the Volgograd oil depot, a fuel train in occupied Crimea, and three Caspian Sea oil platforms over 950 km from the frontline.

Air defense radar destroyed in Crimea

Ukraine’s military also confirmed the destruction of a “Podlyot” radar station in Russian-occupied Crimea, near the settlement of Frunze. The radar is used to support Russian air defense and surveillance capabilities.

The Podlyot is a mobile radar system designed to detect air targets at low and extremely low altitudes - including drones and cruise missiles - and provides targeting data for Russia's S-300 and S-400 air defense systems. Each unit is valued at approximately $5 million.

The destruction follows months of systematic Ukrainian strikes against Russian radar and air defense infrastructure across occupied Crimea. Ukrainian forces have hit several radar systems in recent weeks, degrading Russia's ability to detect incoming drones and missiles.

Degrading Russia's radar network opens corridors for Ukrainian drone and missile strikes deeper into occupied territory. The campaign has enabled Ukrainian forces to strike Russian aircraft parked at Crimean airbases - three jets were hit at Belbek in December alone.

Strikes on Russian personnel in occupied and border territories

In addition, Ukrainian forces struck concentrations of Russian personnel in occupied parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast and in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast, the General Staff said.

Frequently asked questions

Which Russian regions were targeted in the coordinated drone campaign on January 23?

The operation successfully hit targets across a vast geographic range, specifically striking a fuel and lubricants base in the Penza region and a strategic radar installation located in occupied Crimea. These locations are hundreds of kilometers apart, demonstrating Ukraine's ability to coordinate deep-range strikes.

What specific type of military equipment was destroyed in Crimea?

According to the report, the strike in Crimea targeted a Russian radar station used for long-range airspace surveillance. This system is critical for detecting incoming aerial threats, and its destruction creates significant "blind spots" in Russia’s air defense network over the Black Sea region.

What was the primary objective of hitting the Penza fuel base?

The attack on the Penza facility aimed to disrupt the logistical supply chain of the Russian military. By destroying fuel and lubricant reserves deep within Russian territory, Ukraine seeks to degrade the mobility and operational readiness of Russian mechanized units and aviation.
