Ex NATO chief: Continued Ukraine focus key to deter Russian aggression’s expansion

Former NATO secretary-general Lord George Robertson urges the world to keep Ukraine in focus, warning that reduced attention could embolden Russia to expand its aggression beyond Ukraine’s borders, according to ITVX.

Former NATO Secretary-General Lord George Robertson has issued a stark warning, emphasizing the crucial need to maintain global attention on Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

Robertson, who served as NATO’s top official between 1999 and 2003, said Russian President Vladimir Putin would be emboldened to extend the attacks beyond Ukraine if foreign governments stop supplying Ukraine with weaponry.

While acknowledging the temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, Robertson urged the international community not to overlook the ongoing conflict in Ukraine:

“I think it is inevitable that because we’re seeing the television from Gaza every day, that people are paying less attention to Ukraine, but that must change,” he said.

The former NATO chief pointed out that Putin’s ambitions, including halting NATO enlargement and dividing Europe from America, had not materialized as planned.

“Vladimir Putin is not simply interested in subjugating Ukraine. He has got a much bigger agenda in the future, and if he succeeds in Ukraine, who knows where he is going to stop,” Robertson said.

Robertson called for unwavering unity among nations to provide Ukraine with the necessary weaponry and ammunition, emphasizing that doing so was crucial to changing Putin’s course.

“We cannot allow the Ukraine conflict to go down the attention span. That suits Vladimir Putin and nobody else,” he added.
