Russian strike drones hit three districts of Odesa overnight on 27 April, damaging a hotel, warehouses, apartment buildings, vehicles, and the city's hillside funicular, the head of Odesa Oblast Military Administration Oleh Kiper reported. Fourteen people were injured, including two children, with five hospitalized, mostly with shrapnel wounds, Kiper later updated.
The strike was part of a 94-drone overnight attack on Ukraine, in which air defense downed or suppressed 74 drones across the north, south, and east, the Ukrainian Air Force said, adding that 20 drones hit 15 locations across the country.
Three districts of Odesa hit, including the city center
The Prymorskyi district saw the heaviest damage, with the city center's hotel, residential buildings, and other facilities struck, the head of Odesa City Military Administration Serhii Lysak reported. Most of those wounded, including the children, were injured there.

The Khadzhybeiskyi and Kyivskyi districts were also hit, with residential high-rises, private homes, and vehicles damaged, Lysak added.

The port-adjacent area of the city took damage as well, Kiper noted. Windows were blown out across many of the affected buildings.

Over 250 emergency and utility workers spent the night clearing the strike sites, according to Lysak. The injured received medical assistance, and residents of damaged buildings were given consultations on compensation.
A landmark hillside lift on the target list
Among the structures damaged in the overnight strike was Odesa's funicular — a short hillside lift connecting the historic Prymorskyi Boulevard to the port below, near the famous Potemkin Stairs. The lift sits in the city's UNESCO-protected historic center.
Russian strikes on this part of Odesa are not new. Heritage buildings in the UNESCO zone have been damaged repeatedly, with Russia hitting the Pryvoz market and Prymorskyi Boulevard in July 2025. About 100 cultural heritage sites in Odesa were damaged as of 2024.
Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts also under fire
Russia drones also targeted communities in Sumy Oblast, northeastern Ukraine, the head of Sumy Oblast Military Administration Oleh Hryhorov said.
Some drones were intercepted, but transport infrastructure and adjacent buildings were damaged in Romny hromada. A 55-year-old woman experienced an acute stress reaction and received medical assistance, Hryhorov added. The residential sector took damage, and some consumers lost power.

The residential sector and critical infrastructure were also hit in Sumy hromada, with no injuries reported.

In Chernihiv Oblast, two people were injured in a massive Russian attack that hit critical infrastructure and two enterprises, sparking large-scale fires, the State Emergency Service reports.
