Over the last weekend, Zaporizhzhia experienced a new sad record due to Russia's war. An air raid alert lasted continuously for eight hours, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, UkrInform reports.
More than 70% of Zaporizhzhia Oblast is under Russian occupation. However, the region's main city, Zaporizhzhia, remains free.
"Yesterday, the alarm sounded for eight uninterrupted hours. This is a new record. The Russians attempted to strike civilian and energy infrastructure," Fedorov says.
He adds that the Russian army attacked the city of Vilniansk, home to nearly 100,000 people. As a result, 23,000 residents were temporarily without electricity. Due to the prompt work of energy workers, power was quickly restored.
How the region protects civilians during alerts and attacks
Fedorov notes that the region operates 403 resilience points, 350 of which run 24/7. These shelters are fully equipped so residents can remain safe even during long-term power and heating outages.
Such measures are critical for protecting civilians during regular Russian attacks on residential and critical infrastructure.
The region's strategic importance in 2026
Earlier, military analyst Denys Popovych said that the Russian occupation army is attempting to capture footholds near Zaporizhzhia to conduct mass artillery shelling of the city, per Kyiv24.
"Artillery strikes are especially dangerous because there is no prior air raid warning. They start suddenly. Imagine the consequences of massive shelling hitting residential areas," he explained.
This means people have no time to hide, and the city has no subway to shelter all the civilians.
Popovych emphasized that while Pokrovsk remains the primary focus for Russian forces, the southern Zaporizhzhia direction could become decisive in 2026.
The region’s strategic location, linking southern Ukraine to the eastern front, has already made it a frequent target for assaults, artillery barrages, and drone attacks.
