Largest-ever drone assault hits Moscow: Airports close, homes ablaze

Moscow faced its largest-ever drone assault early today, with Russian officials reporting around 30 drones intercepted over the capital. The Russian Defense Ministry later confirmed that 34 drones were neutralized over Moscow Oblast alone, with a total of 70 taken down across Russian territory.

The attack highlights Ukraine’s growing drone production. With Western allies restricting supplied weapons for strikes on Russian territory, Kyiv has developed long-range drones reaching up to 1,000 km. Officials report monthly production of thousands of drones, from reconnaissance to long-range combat models.

Visual evidence from Sofyino, near Moscow, shows that anti-air defenses are in action, resulting in fires that damage homes and vehicles. In Ramenskoye district, two houses were set ablaze in Stanovoye village, and a 52-year-old woman suffered injuries from falling debris, according to Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov.

The attack has forced the suspension of flights at Moscow’s three major airports—Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky. Russian media outlet RBK notes that this incident surpasses the previous major assault of 10 September, when 20 drones targeted Moscow Oblast.

Ukraine has not commented on the attacks.

Russia attacks Ukraine nightly with drones, missiles, and bombs, with strikes intensifying in recent months.
