Former US President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, announced plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 27 September at Trump Tower in New York City.
Trump had previously expressed intentions to meet with the Ukrainian President but made several contradictory statements recently suggesting the meeting might not occur.
“President Zelenskyy asked to meet with me, and I will meet with him tomorrow morning, around 9:45 (16:45 Kyiv time) at Trump Tower,” Trump said during a press conference, Ukrinform reports.
Trump commented on the situation in Ukraine, saying, “It’s a disgrace what’s happening in Ukraine – so many deaths, so much destruction, it’s terrible.”
Trump also shared an image on his Truth Social platform, purportedly showing a letter from Zelenskyy proposing the meeting.
The news agency reports that Zelenskyy has already met with President Biden and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris during his visit to the United States.
Zelenskyy reportedly presented Ukraine’s Victory Plan and discussed strategies to counter Russian aggression with the US President. Ahead of the meeting, unnamed US officials were reportedly “unimpressed” with Zelenskyy’s plan, as per WSJ. The plan, which hasn’t been public yet, allegedly offers little new strategy beyond repackaged weapons requests.
