Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, has reaffirmed that the invitation for Ukraine to join NATO is a critical component of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s strategic plan for victory in the ongoing war with Russia. Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Yermak emphasized the necessity of the NATO invitation as part of a broader approach to secure a just and lasting peace.
As Ukraine continues to navigate the complexities of its defense strategy and international partnerships, the push for NATO membership remains a focal point of its broader strategy for enduring security and stability in the region. Without Ukraine in NATO, the EU risks leaving its eastern flank vulnerable, which could lead to further Russian aggression in the region, ultimately threatening the security of the entire EU.
“Ukraine’s NATO invitation is part of the victory plan. I also urged our partners not to be swayed by threats of escalation from the Russian Federation,” he stated during his address. This assertion underscores Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening its international alliances amid ongoing hostilities.
Yermak detailed that Zelenskyy’s victory plan encompasses a clear roadmap of actions necessary for achieving peace, consisting of both military and diplomatic efforts. He highlighted that while Ukraine has ramped up its weapon production sixfold, the country still faces significant resource shortages to meet all operational needs.
“We must gain an advantage on the battlefield to compel Putin to cease hostilities. We are making every effort. Without naval power, we destroyed the Black Sea Fleet. Lacking air superiority, we halted Russian advances in many directions, including Kharkiv. Fearlessly, we have brought the war back to Russia,” Yermak emphasized, reflecting on Ukraine’s resilience in the face of adversity.
Yermak also called on allies to bolster military assistance and expedite its delivery. Key priorities include air defense systems, drones, electronic warfare capabilities, long-range systems, and artillery shells. Additionally, he stressed the importance of allowing Ukraine to strike within Russian territory and to utilize frozen Russian assets to support its military efforts.
