Zelenskyy: Biden can make “historic” decisions before term ends

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on US President Joe Biden to make crucial decisions to strengthen Ukraine while still in office, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

Zelenskyy is set to present a detailed “victory plan” to Biden during their upcoming meeting in Washington on 26 September. This plan reportedly includes an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and the EU and commitments from the United States for ongoing supplies of advanced weaponry amid Russian aggression.

During a closed meeting with journalists on 20 September, Zelenskyy emphasized Biden’s potential to have a lasting impact on Ukraine’s security and independence, according to Interfax Ukraine.

“Biden can strengthen Ukraine and make important decisions to make Ukraine stronger and protect its independence while he is the US President,” Zelenskyy stated, framing it as a “historic mission” from Ukraine’s perspective.

He acknowledged the complexity of Biden’s position, noting that the US President has his own life and political career to consider.

Zelenskyy highlighted the evolving nature of their relationship, mentioning that previous discussions with Biden have led to changes in the US President’s stance on certain issues. However, he stressed that convincing Biden to take decisive action would depend on various factors, including “certain people” and whether Biden is receptive to Ukraine’s arguments.

The Ukrainian leader intends to share his “victory plan” with other US political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. He emphasized his interest in hearing Harris’s thoughts on the proposed strategy, indicating a desire to secure bipartisan support for Ukraine’s future.
