Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation has issued a warning about an upcoming disinformation campaign by foreign media. Western journalists with prior Russian experience are suspected of planning to spread false information about Ukraine’s leadership to divide society.
Ukraine: Disinfo campaign planned in Western media targeting Ukrainian leadership

The Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council says that Western media are preparing a series of fakes about Ukraine’s top leadership.

According to the Center, English-language media are preparing a series of publications with disinformation about Ukraine’s military and political leadership. It is noted that they are being prepared by foreign journalists who used to work in Russia, in particular during the 2000s, the early years of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s rule.

“The purpose of such actions is to split Ukrainian society,” the statement says.

The disinformation operations often target the Ukrainian leadership.

On 1 November 2023, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi reported that false information about him was being spread on the Internet, in particular through fake accounts using his name.

The Ministry of Defense said that someone was creating fake accounts of the head of the department, Rustem Umerov, to “collect information from Ukrainian citizens.” The Ministry of Defense is asking for complaints against these accounts.
