Former President Viktor Yanukovych, who is hiding from Ukrainian law enforcement in Russia, asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to use his troops to “restore law” in Ukraine. The statement by Yanukovych, dated March 1, 2014, was read by Vitaliy Churkin, Russia’s UN representative, at the UN Security Council meeting Monday evening, March 3, reports Ukrainska Pravda.
Yanukovych’s appeal to Putin states:
“As the legitimately elected president of Ukraine, I state that the events on Maidan and the illegal seizure of power have brought Ukraine to the brink of civil war. There is panic, chaos and anarchy in the country. Life, safety, human rights are threatened, especially in the Southeast and in Crimea.
Under the influence of Western countries, open terror and violence are taking place. People are being persecuted for their political and linguistic characteristics. For this reason, I’m appealing to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to use the armed forces of the Russian Federation to restore the rule of law, peace, order, stability and protection of the Ukrainian population.”
