Analysis & Opinion, Russia

Sixty ethnic Tuvin professional soldiers clashed with about 100 ethnic Russian professional soldiers at a sergeants training academy in Yelan in Sverdlovsk oblast earlier this week. The fighting turned violent and 14 of the soldiers remain hospitalized, according to regional news agencies.

According to anonymous inside sources, “three months ago approximately 60 contract soldiers arrived from Tuva to take courses” so that they could be promoted. On the night before graduation, they purchased alcohol to celebrate but “having gotten drunk, they recalled” the hostility and mistreatment they had encountered from the ethnic Russian soldiers.

Armed with knives and clubs, they threw themselves on the Russians, wounding 13 soldiers and one officer. An investigation has begun, and the defense ministry is supposedly flying in from Moscow. But officials have gone out of their way to say that no guns were used in the clash.

On the one hand, many may be tempted to dismiss this as the result of alcohol at a time of graduation ceremonies; but on the other, this event may be far more serious than the usual incidents of “dedovshchina” that are routinely reported which involve what the Russians calls “non-standard behavior” by one group of soldiers against others, usually more junior draftees.

There are at least three reasons for the conclusion, one that will be most worrisome to Russian commanders:

  • First, these were all professional soldiers, people who had been screened for longterm service as sergeants in the Russian army. If they are so deeply split ethnically as to come to blow, unit cohesion below them is likely to be even more problematic.
  • Second, the relative size of the two components – 60 Tuvins to 100 ethnic Russians – reflects the demographic decline of the Russian nation and the fact that Moscow is increasingly forced to draft or recruit as professionals ever more non-Russians who continue to grow at a more rapid rate than do the Russians.
  • And third, the fact that it was the Tuvans in this case is likely to be worrisome not only because Russian commanders have typically viewed the Tuvans as more loyal and obedient than the North Caucasians whom it still does not draft heavily or promote but have chosen to promote them.

If Moscow can no longer count on non-Russian nations like the Tuvins, it can’t count on almost anyone other than ethnic Russians. There will thus be fallout from this clash, but it remains to be seen how much of it will be reported.

So what EP? It’s nearly not as bad as we see with the police in USA where they shoot every black man on sight? Why not do a report on that?

    • Mykola Potytorsky

raffie the police shootings in the USA are reported – what about Russian police shootings? I know those are not reported even though there are hundreds per year.

      • Ihor Dawydiak

Rafochka is a two-bit pro-Putin troll who is hiding in the US trying to avoid deportation back to his home country of Venezuela. However, he might be given the option of joining his brothers behind bars at the US Naval Base in Guantanamo.

Whatsaboutism, deviation from the subject, etc… Apparently you have nothing to say about the subject of the article…

      • Rafael Hernandez

All i’m saying is that confrontations between different ethnicities happens everywhere on earth. Just last year a kid 14 years old killed 2 other people here in norway because of rascism.

        • Микола Данчук

But are you not a proponent of racism?
Read your own posts carefully and see where you stand!

          • Rafael Hernandez

I’m not rascist, but if you want to know one, look up Parubiy

          • Vol Ya

The definition of a racist is putin and all his paid trolls. They support the banning of the Ukrainian language in Crimea. They also support the extinction of the Tatars in Crimea. That is an example of Russian imperialism and fascism.

          • Oknemfrod

Show me what Parubiy has even said or done that even remotely resembles racism.

          • Микола Данчук

He may reference Andriys’ time working with Tyahnybok in 1991.

Don’t make me laugh by linking a vehemently anti-Ukrainian, pro-so-called-novorossiya site with their views on Parubiy. But even they, while calling him “fascist and racist” in the title of this hit piece and pretending to quote him authentically (in Russian he never speaks) come away empty-handed, for even their own quotes indicate neither fascism or racism on his part in any way, shape, or form.

In the first quote, he says (assuming it’s not fake): “Essentially, then Ukraine defended the white race from the total invasion of the Asian hordes”. What of it? The Golden Horde, all of the Mongoloid race, invaded other peoples, all of the Caucasian race; and hence, yes, effectively Ukraine defended the white race from the onslaught by different race. In the other quote, he says that the barbarians cannot destroy the spirit of the white race. There’s nothing fascist or racist in the either quote, unless one adheres to the asinine conviction that merely uttering the words “white race” makes one a racist. It’s utter nonsense.

I think Andriy is quite an amiable person, personally speaking, just don’t piss him off when it comes to Ukraine.

But I was talking about you, you find nothing wrong with the racism you spew?
Or are you the Guardian Angel of morality in the era of Putinism?

Oh, you Bolsheviks know very well all Ukrainians are Nazi because that was all you learned about us from your NKVD leaders! That and Babeyaga Bandera!

            Many many honest Ukrainians…

          • Микола Данчук

” Many many honest Ukrainians…”, only those that are pro-russia?
Irina Berezhnaya…, was more on the fence and died in an accident.
Would you have any idea of how many Ukrainians are anti-Nazi and anti-Putin?
Personally, I support the rights of the Russian people and not the siloviki!

          • Eddy Verhaeghe

Again whatsaboutism, deviation from the subject, etc… And again I must conclude that you have nothing to say about the subject of the article…

So applying your reasoning to Norway it can be said “In Norway all 14 year olds kill two people on sight”.
Which i know is not true but the media will give you that impression.
Intelligent people find out the facts before using hyperbole.
In the US race relations are a touchy matter. Unfortunately we have people on both sides of the political spectrum who make a living off of fanning Racial tensions and a media that can and should know better.

    • Микола Данчук

And Putins National Guard can kill with impunity!
US police are subject to rule of law and can be prosecuted for any misconduct!

    • Victor Victory

“Every black man on sight?” Wtf are smoking, shoes?

Russians kill, torture, and abuse blacks <— that's a fact

    • Oknemfrod

Because there’s nothing to report on, dummy – your cranium is just chock full of sovok-style propagandist refuse. In the US, the police never did anything of the “shoot every black on sight” even during the times when racial segregation and discrimination really existed. Now find me a police department where at least half of the officers aren’t black themselves.

        • Oknemfrod

BS. Show me the racial breakdown by department in Montgomery and Bucks counties. (Then, just for fun, do the same for Philadelphia county.) Regardless, I’ve seen plenty of black cops on the streets of both, and at any rate, you can bet your house that the black-to-white ratio in the police corps of both counties far exceeds that of their combined population – as it is the case for the entire US on the average.

          • Screwdriver

            BS ? :-) Really ? :-)
Make your bet, I just visited some local police departments (job related)
I can take you to Warwick township police department, or Warrington.
When I was there not long ago, I did not see a single (black) soul.
I will be in Doylestown police department in September, I will ask them if they have at least one black person there. :-)

    • Murf

      “Every black man on sight”?
      Exaggerate much?
“roughly 49 percent of those killed by officers from May 2013 to April 2015 were white, while 30 percent were black. He also found that 19 percent were Hispanic and 2 percent were Asian and other races.”
You see there is a big difference between media coverage and reality.

Putler, the shirtless is now this week in Tuva on holiday, fishing with his shirtless Minister of Defence……….

  • Ihor Dawydiak

First the Muslims in general, then the Chechens (plus every non-Russian native from the Caucasus Region), then the Tatars (both Crimean and Kazan) and now the Tuvans. However, the Tuvans may have a “Guardian Angel or Devil” (depending on your point of view) in their midst. The Russian Defense Minister, Shoigu, is an ethnic Tuvan from Tuva and he is also a favorite of Putin which should not come as a surprise since Putin is also part Mongolian and has a deep love for his ancestral Mongolian homeland.

Fall-out from new sanctions on Russia to be huge – Ohryzko
The recently imposed US sanctions on Russia will kick in in 6 months when the US financial intelligence gathers information on the deposits and assets of Russia’s mighty in the West, Ukraine’s ex-foreign minister Volodymyr Ohryzko said Aug. 5, reported.

As soon as the proposal to put these deposits, Vladimir Putin’s including, on hold comes through there will be a dramatic twist in the situation, and we will see changes in the Russian foreign policy, Ohryzko said.

“This not happening, Russia will continue its decline. There are no other options,” the diplomat said.

With the signing of the sanctions by Trump, Moscow’s last hopes to befriend the US president have failed, Ohryzko said.

“Hence, Russian leaders will now make statements similar to the one mouthed by Putin’s press secretary Peskov to the effect that ‘we have expected this to happen.’

Yet, Russia will be forced now to take decisions as the sanctions take away Moscow’s chance to return to business as usual. The sanctions will hit Russia’s cash cow – its oil/gas sector,” Ohryzko said.

In the meantime in the real news: Javelins will be given to Ukraine to wipe out the Russian tanks in Donbass.

US president National Security Advisor, Herbert McMaster, explained why the United States can begin selling lethal weapons to Ukraine, MSNBC reports.

According to McMaster, the interests of the United States include increasing the defense capacity of Ukraine to prevent “intrusion into its territory.”

He also added that for Washington it does not matter what kind of help will be rendered to Kyiv.

“The point is, what kind of support is needed for Ukraine, which will meet our interests and desire to ensure that Russia does not take further actions to destabilize the situation,” he said.

We recall that earlier NBC News, citing three sources, reported that the Pentagon sent a letter to the White House with a recommendation to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons, namely high-tech anti-tank weapons Javelin.
