26 November, 2014 – OTTAWA – The Ukrainian Congress (UCC) welcomes the announcement by the Government of Canada on the provision of additional non-lethal military assistance to Ukraine’s military.
Canada’s Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, today announced,
“Our Government is committed to supporting the Ukrainian people as they fight for democracy and the sovereignty of their country in the face of the Putin regime’s military aggression. These contributions are a clear demonstration of our support for the people of Ukraine, and their pursuit of a secure and stable future.”
The assistance announced today will total $11 million, and includes:
- $ 5 million for protective gear, including surplus Canadian Forces cold weather gear – about 30,000 coats, 30,000 pairs of pants, 70,000 pairs of Gore-Tex boots and 4,500 pairs of gloves;
- $3 million for explosive ordinance disposal equipment;
- $1 million for communications equipment;
- $1 million for night and thermal vision equipment and binoculars;
- $1 million for medical training, and a mobile field hospital.
The first shipment of equipment and supplies is scheduled to arrive in Ukraine by the end of November.
“The support provided by the Government of Canada will be of enormous help to the brave men and women in uniform in Ukraine at a critical time. As Ukraine continues to face invasion by the Russian Federation, this gear will increase the effectiveness of Ukraine’s military,” stated Paul Grod, National President of the UCC. “We are thankful to the Government of Canada for this latest assistance package and their steadfast support of the people of Ukraine as they continue their brave struggle to protect their country’s independence and territorial integrity.”
