According to a September 29 post on the official Telegram channel of the Ukrainian Army’s 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade the attack took place near Orikhovo-Vasylivka. The brigade reported the destruction of most motorcycles and elimination of the attacking Russian troops.

The Russian motorcycle assaults may be an attempt to adapt pre-WWI cavalry charges to modern warfare. The speed and maneuverability of motorcycles provide some protection against both FPV drones and conventional weapons.

The Brigade stated:

“A motorized assault on the positions of the 30th Brigade on the E-40 highway. The attackers used 10 to 14 motorcycles, 8 of which were destroyed along with the riders.”

The Ukrainian forces were able to detect the attack in advance using aerial reconnaissance, allowing them to employ artillery strikes against the advancing Russian units.

Footage shows that while some motorcycles were destroyed during their approach, others managed to reach the trench line. However, the attackers were unable to withstand the defensive fire and were forced to retreat.

Militarnyi notes that the incident highlights the increasing popularity of motorcycle assault tactics among Russian forces. These units are primarily tasked with rapidly approaching Ukrainian positions and quickly entering trenches.

However, as demonstrated in this case, when such groups are detected early, they can suffer significant losses from Ukrainian defensive fire.
