NATO's top military body is coming to Ukraine for the first time in nearly a decade. NATO's Military Committee will visit Ukraine in October, the last such visit having been eight years ago, Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi said after his first conversation with Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the committee's chair, the General Staff reported.

Coming early in Drapatyi's tenure as commander-in-chief, the plans on the first NATO Military Committee trip to Ukraine reflect an alliance drawing closer to a country that both receives its support and feeds back combat experience no other NATO member has.

Drapatyi briefed NATO on the front and Ukraine's priorities

Drapatyi laid out the war for the alliance's top soldier. He informed Cavo Dragone about the situation at the front and Ukraine's priorities: long-range strikes, flexible infantry tactics, and the robotization of the front line, according to the General Staff.

Air defense was a focus. Drapatyi stressed that protecting the skies is his priority amid the same interceptor-shortage problem that has left Ukrainian cities exposed to Russian missiles. He thanked the admiral for his consistent support, noting Cavo Dragone had visited Ukraine three times and seen the situation firsthand.

Ukraine frames itself as a contributor

Drapatyi cast the relationship as two-way.

"In October, we expect the NATO Military Committee in Ukraine. The last such visit was eight years ago. Ukraine not only receives support. We transfer combat experience that no one has today, and it works for the security of the whole Alliance," he said.

The admiral confirmed continued support

Cavo Dragone affirmed NATO's backing. He confirmed NATO's continued military support as Ukraine defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and said allies in Europe and North America are ramping up defense production, speeding deliveries, and supporting the transfer of needed equipment to Ukraine, he wrote on X.

"I have seen Ukrainian courage with my own eyes: soldiers holding the line with extraordinary bravery for their homes, their families, and their freedom," Dragone said.

He tied Ukraine's security to the alliance's own.

"Ukraine's security is our security, and we will continue to stand alongside Ukraine to help achieve a just and lasting peace," he added.
