Russian attack on Kyiv kills 20, injures about 100 – UPDATED

At least 20 people were killed in Kyiv in Russia's overnight drone and missile attack on 2 July, the Kyiv City Military Administration reported.

According to Kyiv mayor Vitalii Klitschko, the Russia attacked injured 86 people, 70 of whom were hospitalized.

Russia carried out a combined drone and missile attack on Kyiv overnight on 2 July, according to Klitschko, Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko, and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, who each posted updates on Telegram.

The strike followed a warning a day earlier: on 1 July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia was preparing a new massed strike on Ukraine. Within hours, Russian forces struck Kyiv with drones, before missiles were also reported heading toward the capital.

Casualty toll climbs through the morning

Klymenko gave an initial count around 8 am: "As of now (8 am — ed.), 11 dead and more than 30 injured are confirmed in the capital. Unfortunately, the number of casualties will grow. People continue to seek help."

Tkachenko subsequently put the injury toll at 56, including two children, and said damage had been recorded at more than 28 locations across the city. Klitschko later updated the figures further: 13 dead, 86 injured, 70 hospitalized.

Nine-story building hit in Darnytskyi district

Klymenko said Russian forces destroyed part of a nine-story residential building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district. "The State Emergency Service is currently working to rescue people from under the rubble," he said. "At this location, 17 people were rescued, seven of them freed from a deadly trap. Unfortunately, one person died." He added that some residents were still considered missing.

Across Kyiv, more than 20 residential buildings were damaged by the strike, Klymenko said. Rescue crews remained active at 15 locations as of the morning.

Kyiv oblast also hit

Consequences of the overnight attack were also recorded in five districts of Kyiv oblast, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration, who reported the damage on Telegram.

Damage was recorded as follows:

• In Bucha district, rescuers extinguished fires at warehouses and a private house; a car was damaged.
• In Brovary district, six private houses, a dormitory building, and a car were damaged.
• In Obukhiv district, private houses were damaged.
• In Fastiv district, private houses were damaged.
• In Vyshhorod district, a car was damaged.

Kalashnyk said three men were injured in Bucha district. "Two of the injured, diagnosed with closed head trauma, body burns, and lacerated wounds to the head, were hospitalized. They are under doctors' supervision and receiving all necessary medical care. Another man sustained lacerated wounds to the face. All necessary aid was provided to him on site."
