Ukraine has confirmed it struck a Russian border patrol ship assigned to guard the Crimean Bridge in the Kerch Strait, in what officials describe as another targeted hit on Russia’s maritime security system in occupied Crimea.

The vessel, identified as a “Svitlyak”-class border patrol ship, was operating in the Kerch Strait area near the Crimean Bridge when it was hit on 4 June, according to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces and statements from Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk, as reported by We-Ukraine.

Ship guarding Crimean Bridge struck in Kerch Strait operation

Pletenchuk said the ship was part of Russia’s layered security network protecting the Crimean Bridge and surrounding maritime approaches. It was used by Russia’s FSB border service for patrol and surveillance duties aimed at monitoring surface activity and maintaining control over the area.

He described the vessel as more than a routine patrol boat, noting it is a third-rank ship used for sustained operational tasks. According to him, such vessels form part of Russia’s continuous effort to secure one of its most sensitive and heavily defended maritime zones.

The Navy spokesperson also said verification of the full damage assessment is ongoing, but confirmed the strike targeted an active component of Russia’s security presence around the bridge.

Pressure on Russian maritime defences in key strategic zone

The Kerch Strait and Crimean Bridge area has been a repeated focus of Ukrainian attacks, with Moscow consistently reinforcing its naval and coastal security assets there after earlier successful strikes on infrastructure and military targets.

Pletenchuk said Russia cannot leave the Crimean Bridge without constant protection, given previous Ukrainian operations in the area, and is forced to maintain continuous patrol coverage despite mounting pressure on its available assets.

Crimean Bridge built after 2014 occupation of Crimea

The Crimean Bridge was constructed by Russia after its 2014 occupation and annexation of Crimea, which is widely recognized internationally as illegal. The structure was built to physically connect Russia with the occupied peninsula and has since become a heavily fortified logistical and military route.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted the bridge and its surrounding infrastructure, viewing it as a key symbol and supply line of Russia’s control over occupied Crimea.

Unmanned Systems Forces confirm overnight strike in occupied Crimea

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces said the vessel was struck overnight on 4 June near the settlement of Yurkine in occupied Crimea.

Officials have not yet released full details on the extent of the damage but confirmed the target was part of Russia’s maritime security system in the Kerch Strait region. Further verification is ongoing as assessments continue.
