Zelenskyy asks Trump whether Putin’s 9 May ceasefire means more than hours of safety for his own propaganda parade

Russia has used temporary pauses before, framed as humanitarian gestures or goodwill signals, to regroup forces, rotate units, resupply front-line positions, and then resume offensive operations.

Zelenskyy asks Trump whether Putin’s 9 May ceasefire means more than hours of safety for his own propaganda parade

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on a proposal by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to introduce a ceasefire on 9 May. The proposal refers to the period of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, which the Kremlin traditionally uses as a propaganda tool.

The parade remains a key element of Russia’s information policy aimed at domestic audiences and justifying the war against Ukraine.

Zelenskyy instructed officials to contact the US President Donald Trump's team to clarify the details of the Russian initiative.

“We will find out what exactly is being proposed: a few hours of safety for the parade in Moscow or something more,” the Ukrainian president said.

Kyiv seeks to understand the real substance of the proposal rather than rely on declarative statements, he added.

Russia uses pauses to regroup and apply pressure

According to the ISW, such unilateral ceasefires benefit Russia by allowing it to accuse Ukraine of violations while simultaneously regrouping forces and resources.

This includes preparation for new strikes using drones and long-range missiles.

Ukraine calls for a long-term ceasefire with guarantees

“Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, ensuring reliable security for people and a lasting peace,” Zelenskyy stated.

He emphasized that Ukraine is ready to work within any effective international format to end the war and continues diplomatic efforts toward a real peace.

Trump’s stance adds political weight

Shortly after Zelenskyy's statements, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia does not require Ukraine to declare a ceasefire for 9 May. He added that the decision will supposedly be made unilaterally by Vladimir Putin, Interfax reported.

Earlier, during a conversation with Trump, Putin reportedly expressed readiness to declare a ceasefire for the holiday period, as per the Clash Report. According to aide Yuri Ushakov, the American politician “actively supported this initiative.”

This increases the proposal's political significance, though it does not guarantee its effectiveness.
