Europe scrambles to ship generators to Ukraine as thousands of Kyiv families remain without heat three days after Russian strikes

International partners have sent large-scale emergency energy equipment to Ukraine this week as over 1,110 residential buildings in Kyiv remain without heating for a third consecutive day. The capital continues to suffer the aftermath of a major Russian strike on key thermal infrastructure.

Russia has struck Ukraine's energy infrastructure 257 times this cold season in what officials call "energy terror," making international backup equipment deliveries critical to keeping hospitals, shelters, and millions of civilians warm through the harshest winter since the full-scale invasion began four years ago.

Allies deliver backup energy equipment

Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said international partners continue shipping energy equipment to Ukraine. The gear targets communities, hospitals, and essential services in regions facing power emergencies. This week alone, donors provided backup equipment totaling over 145 MW, according to her.

  • The EU shipped 447 generators with a combined capacity exceeding 7 MW.
  • Italy sent 78 boilers worth 112 MW, the largest single contribution.
  • Germany provided two cogeneration units with 3.8 MW capacity.
  • Poland contributed 379 generators totaling 4.5 MW.
  • France delivered 30 generators producing 3.4 MW combined.
  • UNICEF shipped 106 generators totaling 15.1 MW.

1000+ Kyiv apartment blocks without heat for third day

More than 1,110 residential buildings in Kyiv remained without heating for a third day as of 5 February, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on his Telegram channel.

Kyiv Military Administration press secretary Kateryna Pop said on the national telethon that some buildings required heating systems to be drained due to adverse weather.

"A technological solution is planned to provide additional electricity to those buildings if it's not possible to quickly restore the heat supply," she said.

Over 230 repair crews are now working to fix the damage from Russian attacks, and their number grows daily, Pop added.

Repeated Russian air strikes have left many Kyiv residential buildings without heat during January and in the first days of February.

Overnight on 3 February, during the harshest frost this winter, Russian forces launched another massive strike on thermal power plants that heat Ukrainian cities. The attack knocked out heating in 1,170 Kyiv buildings and caused residential damage and partial emergency power outages.
