One word changed everything: “Commitment” became “proposed” in Paris Declaration’s US support clause for Ukraine

Most European countries won’t send troops even after war ends, and US didn’t sign commitment to aid with boots on the ground either.

One word changed everything: “Commitment” became “proposed” in Paris Declaration’s US support clause for Ukraine

The final Paris Declaration, adopted after the “Coalition of the Resolute” meeting in Paris on 6 January, does not commit the US multinational forces in Ukraine in the event of renewed Russian aggression. In fact, the US did not formally sign the document, the European Pravda reports.

The declaration outlines plans to deploy multinational forces to support Ukraine’s defense and post-war reconstruction. However, most European countries have declined to send troops to Ukraine, even after the fighting ends.

No formal American signature was added to Paris deal

According to the journalists, citing both a draft of the declaration and comments from the Élysée Palace, the US was not an official signatory.

While the coalition statement was approved by its members and discussed with the US, no formal American signature was added.

Comparison of draft and final text shows significant changes

In the draft, the multinational forces would be led by Europeans, with participation from non-European coalition members and the US, including US capabilities such as intelligence and logistics.

A US commitment would be made to support these forces in the event of an attack.

The final version now states that the forces will be led by Europeans, with the participation of non-European coalition members and proposed US support, omitting any legally binding obligation from the US.
