In Ukraine's Dnipro, an emergency of national scale has developed due to a complete power outage following massive Russian attacks, city mayor Borys Filatov claims. Currently, approximately 1 million people reside in the city.
“Technically, the situation in Dnipro is one of the most difficult out of other settlements. This is truly an emergency of national scale,” the mayor says.
Russia is "tormenting Ukrainians"
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted to the humanitarian crisis emerging in oblasts, claiming that Russia is tormenting Ukrainians with the strikes. He has called on the world to react to the strikes.
“These strikes on energy and infrastructure, leaving people without electricity and heating in winter, have no military purpose. This is ... an attempt to break the country,” Zelenskyy says.
98 "warm centers" for 1 million people
Meanwhile, Filatov has reported that the city has been implementing all emergency protocols since last night and remains in constant contact with the regional military administration and relevant ministries and services.
He adds that buses have replaced electric public transport on city routes. The city has fuel reserves for several days.
Dnipro operates 98 municipal “Points of Invincibility”, where people can warm themselves and charge their gadgets.
“Kindergartens are running duty groups for four hours, and schools have extended the winter break until 11 January,” Filatov says.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation has reported that 66 emergency teams from Vodafone, Kyivstar, and Lifecell mobile operators are currently working in the region.
The ministry says 50 additional generators are being delivered to maintain communications, powering stations when batteries run out.
