Ukrainian soldiers from the 8th Special Operations Regiment report they have identified and captured a Russian operative who had been hiding in Kupiansk. He directed strikes against Ukrainian forces.
In 2025, Russia declared its intention to "leverage the seizure of Kupiansk to attack further into eastern Kharkiv Oblast in several directions simultaneously, including toward Chuhuiv, Izium, and Vovchansk." Its plans were to "unite efforts, which would effectively establish a "buffer zone" near the border in northern Kharkiv Oblast.
As of 31 December, only several dozen Russian soldiers remained hiding in the city from Ukrainian forces. Meanwhile, Russian authorities continue to claim that Kupiansk had been "captured."
Radio intercepts and discovery of the "rat"
During the operation, radio intercepts have clearly indicated the presence of a "rat" in one of Kupiansk’s districts. The operative has constantly changed locations and stayed in hiding.
Due to the dense urban environment, numerous shelters, and potential firing positions, locating the enemy became a long and painstaking task for the Ukrainian troops.
As a result, the spotter was found and taken prisoner, marking another successful mission.
