Ukraine’s electricity grid operator said the entire country will face power restrictions on Monday as damage from recent Russian missile-and-drone strikes continues to strain the system.
Months of strikes leave grid short of capacity
The measures follow a new wave of Russian attacks on power plants and high-voltage infrastructure, part of a months-long campaign aimed at reducing Ukraine’s ability to generate and transmit electricity. The strikes have left the grid short of capacity and forced longer outages during periods of high demand.
Rolling blackouts to run all day Monday
Ukrenergo announced that rolling blackouts will run throughout December 8 in every region. Households will lose power multiple times over the course of the day, while large factories will face separate limits on how much electricity they can consume.
Officials said many regions are now seeing 12-16 hours without electricity per day - far more than the 4-8 hour cuts imposed before the latest attacks.
Ukrenergo said the timing and length of blackouts may change depending on grid conditions and urged residents to monitor local updates. The operator also encouraged households to conserve power during the hours when electricity is available.
