Germany plans additional € 3 billion military aid package for Ukraine

Germany intends to allocate an additional €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine, says German Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz, according to Tagesschau.

Since 2022, Germany has emerged as a pivotal supporter, providing extensive military and humanitarian aid. The country has committed billions of dollars in military assistance, including deliveries of IRIS-T air defense systems, Patriot missiles, Gepard anti-aircraft guns, Leopard tanks, and Marder infantry fighting vehicles. Additionally, Germany has trained over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers and supplied significant amounts of ammunition and small arms. The country also remains committed to supporting Ukraine, with €4 billion in aid promised for 2025.

Merz explains that the aid package must be approved by the Upper House of the German Parliament. He expects the Bundesrat to make a decision on 21 March.

It is noted that the German parties, including the Christian Democratic Union, the Social Democratic Party, and the Greens, reached an agreement to increase aid to Ukraine. Merz believes that current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will agree to allocate funds once the financial package for defense and infrastructure is approved.

“I assume the decision will be made no later than next week. There is confirmation,” Merz emphasized, adding that there are no longer any obstacles to allocating the funds.

Following his victory in the 23 February elections, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union party,
Friedrich Merz, pledged that the decision on additional aid to Ukraine would be adopted without hesitation.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense signed a memorandum of understanding with Diehl Defence, the producer of the IRIS-T air defense system.

This system includes both air-to-air and surface-to-air variants, with the IRIS-T SLM offering medium-range defense against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and other guided weapons.
