ISW: Ukraine regains territory near Pokrovsk, Russians make marginal gains in several regions

Recent fighting in eastern Ukraine and Russia’s Kursk Oblast has resulted in territorial changes for both Ukrainian and Russian forces, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on 19 September.

Russia continues to focus on capturing the remaining areas of eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, concentrating most of its forces on the Pokrovsk direction. However, some resources have been shifted to Russia’s Kursk Oblast in an effort to reclaim territory that Ukraine seized during its ongoing incursion into the region.

According to ISW, in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, Ukrainian forces have made marginal advances west of their salient. Geolocated footage from 19 September shows Ukrainian progress east of Veseloe, south of Glushkovo. A Russian milblogger claimed Ukrainian forces also advanced within central Medvezhye.

Ukrainians have also advanced on the northern side of their salient in Kursk Oblast. Geolocated footage from 19 September indicates recent Ukrainian advances southeast of Sheptukhovka and Naydenov.

Russian forces also reportedly made their own advances in Kursk Oblast.

In Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast, Russian forces have recently advanced north of Kharkiv City. Geolocated footage from 19 September shows Russian advances in dacha areas west of Hlyboke and along the Travianske Reservoir.

Southwest of Svatove in Luhansk Oblast, Russian forces made confirmed marginal advances. Geolocated footage from 19 September indicates Russian progress in western Luhansk’s Makiivka.

In Donetsk Oblast, Russian forces advanced southeast of Siversk and north of Chasiv Yar. Geolocated footage from 18 September shows recent Russian advances southeast of Vyimka and in Hryhorivka.

Near Pokrovsk – the area of Russia’s main push, Ukrainian forces recaptured some territory while Russian forces made marginal advances. Geolocated footage from 19 September shows Ukrainian advances southeast of Marynivka, while footage from 18 September indicates Russian advances southwest of Mykhailivka.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russian forces made marginal gains near Hulyaipole. Geolocated footage from 18 September shows Ukrainian forces striking a Russian-occupied building north of Marfopil, indicating previous Russian advances in the area.
