Ukraine downs 28/29 air targets during Russia’s nighttime assault

Overnight on 27 June, Russia launched a missile and air strike against Ukraine, employing aeroballistic, guided, and cruise missiles, as well as Shahed-type drones, reported Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk.

During the air defense battle, Ukrainian forces successfully downed 28 aerial targets, including four Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the northeastern Black Sea, one Kh-59/Kh-69 air guided missile from Russia’s Kursk Oblast, and 23 Shahed-131/136 one-way attack drones launched from Russia’s Primorsko-Akhtarsk. According to Oleshchuk, the Russians deployed six missiles of various types and the 23 drones, but the Ukrainian defenses did not shoot down the Kinzhal Kh-47M2 aeroballistic missile launched from Russia’s Tambov Oblast, managing to intercept all other threats.

At night, air raid alerts were issued across several oblasts in Ukraine as Russia launched attacks using drones followed by cruise missiles, resulting in explosions heard in various areas. This was confirmed by the Ukrainian Air Force and journalists from Ukraine’s Suspilne public broadcaster.

Around 00:30, the Air Forces reported drone activity over Mykolaiv Oblast and moving through Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Oblast towards Odesa Oblast. By 02:05, drones were detected at the border of Chernivtsi and Ternopil Oblasts, as well as in Vinnytsia Oblast moving towards Khmelnytskyi Oblast. Additional drone movements were tracked in Kirovohrad Oblast in a northwest direction, and a group of strike drones was noted coming from Kherson Oblast also headed northwest. At 02:11, Russia launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the south over Mykolaiv Oblast towards Kirovohrad Oblast.

Later, Suspilne journalists reported that explosions were heard in Kyiv and Khmelnytskyi Oblasts.

With power grid being Russia’s main target for months, the overnight attack did not result in any damage to energy facilities, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy. However, due to ongoing combat over the past day, new power outages have occurred in the frontline oblasts of Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson.
