Sweden donates maritime surveillance jet skis to Ukraine

The Swedish government has announced its decision to transfer nine jet skis to Ukraine, previously used for maritime surveillance, for immediate use as requested by the Ukrainian authorities. The announcement came from Sweden’s Defense Ministry on 15 March 2024, following the Coast Guard’s assessment of the potential donation of vessels and other equipment to Ukraine.

“On 21 December, the Coast Guard announced that watercraft used for maritime surveillance can be donated to Ukraine. The Coast Guard announced this through an interim report of the government assignment to analyze the conditions for donating vessels and other equipment to Ukraine,” the press release reads.

The jet skis are part of Sweden’s ongoing support for Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia. According to the Coast Guard, these jet skis can be handed over to Ukraine immediately after being de-identified and stripped of any official equipment. The total donation consists of nine jet skis, ready for immediate transfer.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Sweden to support Ukraine. In recent months, Sweden has contributed significantly to Ukraine’s military aid, including a €30 million contribution to a Czech ammunition initiative, its largest yet aid package worth over $680 million, and the provision of Stridsbåt 90 fast military assault craft and TOW anti-tank missiles. Sweden has also expressed openness to sending Gripen jets to Ukraine in the future, and has increased production of 155mm artillery ammunition for Ukraine.

Additionally, Sweden has provided $4.8 million to NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package Trust Fund for Ukraine and authorized a €124 million winter aid package to support civil infrastructure. The support also includes the donation of infantry fighting vehicles, and training for Ukrainian military personnel.
