France plans to involve some of its arms manufacturers in the production of military equipment directly in Ukraine to help Kyiv in the war against Russia, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on 8 March.

The announcement came after several statements from French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the role of Europeans and NATO in the Ukrainian-Russian war. He also called for Ukrainian allies not to “be cowardly” in supporting the country against Russian aggression, urging them to “rise to the occasion.”

According to the French Defense Minister, three French companies will partner with Ukrainian companies, particularly in drones and land equipment. Firstly, the companies will manufacture spare parts and possibly ammunition, Lecornu said.

The first production reportedly has to be set until summer 2024.

French President Emmanuel Macron met with leaders of political parties on 7 March and said there should be no limits in supporting Ukraine.

During the meeting, Macron provided an overview of the situation on the front, describing a Ukrainian army in difficulty due to a lack of ammunition and the risk of a retreat for the Russians’ benefit.

Macron also spoke about the need for rapid mobilization of additional resources to combat the Russian threat in Ukraine, according to Le Figaro.

Earlier, Emmanuel Macron made statements regarding the role of Europeans and NATO in the Ukrainian-Russian war, including allowing the use of Western troops in Ukraine. Later, he said France is not “considering sending French troops to Ukraine in the near future.”
