In response to Russia’s massive aerial attack on Ukraine on 29 December, US President Joe Biden emphasized the urgency for Congress to approve additional support for Kyiv.
The overnight assault marked the largest such attack since the onset of the war, utilizing drones and missiles, including those with hypersonic capabilities, targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. The missiles struck civilian objects like a maternity hospital, a shopping mall, and residential buildings, resulting in civilian casualties and numerous injuries.
President Biden highlighted the unchanging goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin: the obliteration of Ukraine and the subjugation of its people. “He must be stopped,” Biden asserted.
The President pointed out the successful use of air defense systems provided by the United States and allies, which played a crucial role in intercepting and neutralizing many of the incoming threats. He expressed pride in the American contribution to saving lives and supporting Ukraine’s defense of its freedom and independence.
However, Biden stressed the need for immediate Congressional action to continue the provision of essential weapons and air defense systems to Ukraine. Without prompt legislative support in the new year, the ability to sustain aid to Ukraine may be hindered.
Biden also underscored the broader implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine, stating that the stakes extend to the NATO Alliance, the security of Europe, and the future of the Transatlantic relationship. He warned of the increased risk and global consequences if dictators like Putin are allowed to violate European stability, potentially drawing the United States into direct involvement.
“When dictators and autocrats are allowed to run roughshod in Europe, the risk rises that the United States gets pulled in directly,” Biden said.
With more than 50 countries uniting to support Ukraine, Biden affirmed the United States’ commitment to this coalition, emphasizing the historical judgment that awaits those who fail to support the cause of freedom.
