Ukraine destroys 550 Russian artillery pieces in May 2023, military expert says

In May 2023, the Ukrainian Army destroyed 550 Russian artillery pieces, said military expert Petro Cherniak. “This number is expected to increase in June,” he added.

While commenting on the developments on the battlefield, the expert noted that “the war in Ukraine is 95% an artillery war.” Consequently, the successful destruction of Russian multiple rocket launcher systems, self-propelled artillery units, and air defense systems became crucial for Ukrainian soldiers, as per Ukrainske Radio.

According to Cherniak, at the onset of the war, Russian artillery capabilities surpassed those provided by Western partners to Ukraine. However, during the combat actions, the occupiers almost completely exhausted their resources. Furthermore, Ukrainian defenders learned how to target their ammunition depots, he explained.

Cherniak emphasized that recently Western partners launched a military support mechanism for Ukraine. With each week and month, their military aid would increase. Based on his calculations, by September 2023, Ukraine would achieve ammunition parity with Russian forces.
