Kyiv’s city council has announced an open online vote to determine the best projects for Terra Dignitas, an initiative to memorialize the Euromaidan revolution that took place in the center of Ukraine’s capital city, Maidan square. The call for proposals was announced on May 2014 and was open to Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians alike. The projects winning a public vote will be presented to the contest jury that will make their final decision in May 2015.
The contest was divided into four nominations:
1) Public space of Maidan and Kyiv’s central core
This nomination included 29 projects that proposed to change the appearance of Maidan square or Yevropeyska ploscha.
Tatar Shevchenko, Virgin Mary, and the Ukrainian kozak leader Ivan Mazepa were proposed to take place of the toppled Lenin on Besarabska ploshcha:
2) Memorialization of the events of the Revolution of Dignity and immortalizing the memory of Heroes of the Heaven’s Hundred
This nomination was the most numerous, offering 86 projects, and spanning from churches to constellations to a virtual museum of Maidan. Some highlights:
3) International cultural center “Ukrainian House on Yevropeyska Ploshcha”
One of the organizational centers of the Euromaidan Revolution, the Ukrainian House hosted a kitchen, hospital room, library, headquarters of sotnias, clothes distribution place, University of Maidan, Maidan’s own internal mail service, and more. Projects commemorating the civic spirit of Maidan to decorate its internal space were put forward. This nomination has 9 projects.
4) Multifunctional museum Museum of Maidan. Museum of freedom
This nomination featured 24 projects of both the external appearance of a Maidan museum and the concept of its exposition. Some project highlights:
