President Petro Poroshenko says he is ready to support the wishes of the Ukrainian people for a new Verkhovna Rada (parliament).
In his comments to the media during his visit to Mykolaiv on Thursday, August 21, Poroshenko stated that the constitutional grounds for dissolving the Verkhovna Rada will exist on Independence Day, August 24 , reports the LIGABusinessInform news agency, citing the president’s press service.
“The decision will be made when there are constitutional grounds. As we all know, they will exist on Independence Day,” Poroshenko said.
The president said he would consult with the factions and leadership of the Verkhovna Rada regarding this issue. “In my decisions, I will be guided by the aspirations of the Ukrainian people. They demand restructuring, they demand lustration. Elections are the best form of lustration,” he said.
Poroshenko noted that, according to recent data, more than 80% of Ukrainians support early parliamentary elections. He said he is ready to back the people’s choice. “We do what the people want,” he said.
As previously reported, on July 24, the UDAR and Svoboda factions in Verkhovna Rada announced their withdrawal from the ruling “European Choice” coalition, paving the way to early elections. If deputies do not from a new coalition by the end of August, the president would have the necessary grounds to dissolve the parliament and call for early elections to the Verkhovna Rada for October 26 (unless the campaign is shortened).
According to the Constitution of Ukraine, there are three legal grounds to dissolve the parliament and announce early elections to Verkhovna Rada: the parliament does not meet within a month (after the dissolution of the ruling coalition), a new coalition is not formed within a month, a new government is not formed within 60 days.
Earlier, presidential advisor Oleh Medvedev predicted that Poroshenko may sign the decree to dissolve the Verkhovna Rada and hold early elections next week.
