Former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, whose Ukrainian citizenship and passport were annulled after his relations with President Poroshenko went sour, crossed into the territory of Ukraine through the Polish-Ukrainian border crossing point of Shegyni after a column of his supporters rammed through an armed special forces cordon.

The video of the exact moment, approximately 20:00, 10 September 2017, was captured by the Georgian TV station Rustavi:

This followed a day of the Saakashvili’s unsuccessful attempts to cross into Ukrainian territory. Accompanied by over two dozen Ukrainian politicians, including former Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko, he first boarded a train run by Ukrzaliznytsia, a state-run Ukrainian monopoly. The train did not depart, “due to the refusal of a person who does not have legal reasons to enter Ukraine to leave the train,” according to a statement of Ukrzaliznytsia, and the passengers of the train were offered to continue the journey by buses.

Next, Saakashvili boarded a bus heading to the automobile border crossing point at Shegyni. Half an hour later, the automobile movement on Ukraine’s side of the crossing point was blocked, officially, due to a bomb threat heard about through an anonymous call. An armed special forces cordon blocked the movement.

Saakashvili’s supporters gathered on both sides of the border. At the Ukrainian side of the border, a small rally was held. Eventually, his supporters broke through the armed cordon and dragged the politician to Ukrainian territory.

Saakashvili announced he is heading out to Lviv, where he will think about his further steps.

Illegal deprivation of citizenship, illegal border crossing

Saakashvili, who was invited to head Ukraine’s reform process but ended up a politician in opposition to his old university buddy Petro Poroshenko, was deprived of Ukrainian citizenship in July 2017, while he was on a visit to the USA. It was done according to a decree of President Poroshenko, who declared that Poroshenko provided untruthful information while filling out documents to obtain citizenship, namely – that Saakashvili concealed the fact that he had criminal cases launched against him in Georgia. However, this information was hardly a secret to Poroshenko or anybody else: the Ukrainian side had previously refused to extradite Saakashvili on a request of the Georgian prosecutors, saying it had reasons to believe that extradition application had the purpose of political persecution. The decree came to light not from the president’s website, but from the facebook account of a Radical Party politician. Later, Saakashvili claimed that his signature of the citizenship application documents was forged.

Saakashvili’s party, Rukh Novykh Syl, claims that the annulment is illegal.

The Georgian ex-President gave up his Georgian citizenship when he was invited to head Ukraine’s reform process. However, he fell out of touch with his old university buddy, incumbent Ukrainian President Poroshenko, and became a hard-line opposition figure who many accuse of populism. Rukh Novykh Syl is supported by 1% of Ukrainians. The party cannot run for parliamentary elections, as Mikhail Saakashvili had not resided in Ukraine the required minimum of five years for becoming an MP.

After he was stripped of citizenship, Saakashvili had traveled abroad, giving interviews about his situation. He claimed he possessed only a Ukrainian passport.

On 10 September, the Ukrainian state border service was tasked to withdraw Saakashvili’s Ukrainian domestic and two foreign passports as invalid and return Saakashvili to the territory of the state which he came from.

Myrotvorets, a website close to the SBU gathering information on persons endangering Ukrainian national security, has entered Saakashvili in its database.

LOL! Germany, RuSSia and Poroshenko beware!

This episode is a pretty disgraceful show of arbitrariness by Poroshenko. Let it go all the way to the supreme Court and then jail Poroshenko for abusing power to silence opposition.

the Ukrainian state border service should deploy better services at the Ukrainian-Russian border in the Donbas; I’m sure they can detain lots of illegal entrances into Ukrainian territory!

It’s obvious to me that Poroshenko’s political support is waning as well as the Verkhovna Rada’s. Saakashvili attracts young and well-educated electorate, and this may become detrimental to the ruling kleptocracy.

Speaking about kleptocracy: She is called the GasPrincess

          • laker48

I know. She’s as corrupt as the presently ruling Ukraine oligarchs are. I actually don’t quite understand why she’s throwing her support behind Saakashvili who managed to reduce corruption in his native Georgia so dramatically, that over a decade it rose on the transparency scale from below Moldova, RuSSia and Ukraine in 2004 to above Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania in 2013. He was a hair short of putting behind bars the richest man in Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili.

          • veth

In the ideal world Timoshenko would be the first behind bars if Saakashvili would run Ukraine….

          • laker48

Keep in mind that she’s also one of the brightest Ukrainian business leaders and politicians. She also knows a lot about Ukrainian and RuSSian oligarchs, as well as about their not always lega mutual connections and connections with American, British and German business people and politicians. She’s a potential goldmine for the CIA, MI5. MI6 and Mossad. It seems to me that this is a small part of a much more serious game. She’s got no morals and she’ll sell her former German supporters to the highest bidder in exchange for personal and financial safety of her family and herself.

          • Vladislav Surkov

That pretty much sums up Yulia Tymoshenko. Sadly for Ukraine.

          • laker48

Not necessarily. She’s still very anti-RuSSian and pro-Ukrainian. She may prevent Poroshenko from striking secret deals with Dwarfstan and Germany if his pro-German and anti-American policies fall through. Saakashvili, as a Ukrainian and US-trained lawyer, is an excellent augmentation to her base of support as a world-wide known and proven in action expert in fighting corruption. The stakes in this game are much higher than even Germany and RuSSia combined can afford to double down.

Interior Minister offers two options following Saakashvili’s illegal border crossing Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has said that former Odesa governor Mikheil Saakashvili and other individuals who illegally crossed the border at the Shehini checkpoint need to either arrive immediately at the said border crossing and undergo ID verification or report to the Migration Service.

    Politics 12:00, 11 September 2017

“All participants in the ‘penetration of border,’ including people’s deputies, must report to the police to testify,” he wrote on Facebook. Avakov said he had banned the use of weapons and force against the participants in a mass rally at the checkpoint. According to the minister, law enforcers blocked and detained several dozen aggressive provocateurs. “A humiliating ‘picture’ of the breakthrough of the Ukrainian border by ‘activists’… And it’s not about the personalities involved in or the essence of the conflict… This is a suicidal destruction of the institutional base,” he said. Read also Groysman slams Saakashvili’s act, urges MPs not to swing “flywheel of destruction and chaos” In addition, Avakov drew an analogy between the events at the Izvaryne border checkpoint (Luhansk region) in 2014 and yesterday’s incident with a mob, “intoxicated with impunity”: “I’m sorry for this analogy, but deja vu was too obvious… It’s only that the flags were not Russian…” Following the incident, 16 border guards and police officers were provided medical treatment. Avakov also urged politicians not to swap Ukraine for personal political gains. “The National Police of Ukraine launched a criminal investigation under Article 322 ‘Illegal transfer of persons across the state border of Ukraine.’ The investigation and the formal procedure for collecting factual evidence are underway. This is a grave crime. I’m sure the prosecutor’s office will support us, as well as courts,” Avakov said. Five people’s deputies of Ukraine and the ex-head of the Security Service of Ukraine have illegally crossed the state border of Ukraine together with the leader of the New Forces Movement political party, ex-head of Odesa regional state administration, Mikheil Saakashvili, People’s Front deputy and adviser to the Interior Minister of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko has said.

“The list of people’s deputies of Ukraine who illegally crossed the border of Ukraine together with provocateur Saakashvili: Yulia Tymoshenko, Serhiy Vlasenko, Yuriy Derevianko, Pavlo Kostenko, Dmytro Dobrodomov,” Gerashchenko wrote on his Facebook page on Sept. 11.

So what? Ukraine is bound by the EU Association Agreement that has just come in force and cannot restrict cross-border traffic between the EU and Ukrainian territory. The Ukrainian ambassador in Warsaw has already been summoned to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and asked for explanations why Ukraine tried to prevent Sakkasshvili from entering its territory.

No matter how the Avakov-Poroshenko duo slices or dices it, Saakashvili is a former head of state and senior Ukrainian official who returned to Ukraine in order to challenge Poroshenko’s decision before Ukrainians courts of law. As far as I remember, Poroshenko has signed the Agreement. Every stick has two ends.

Saakashvili claims passport stolen at checkpoint, applies for protection to legalize stay in Ukraine Former chairman of the Odesa Regional State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili during his speech in Lviv on Monday has claimed that the Ukrainian border guards did not want to take his travel document for verification or accept his application to the State Migration Service, and then the police allegedly “stole” his passport, which he “left on the bus,” an UNIAN correspondent reports.

LVIV, Ukraine — President Petro Poroshenko on Sept. 11 accused ex-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, his one-time ally and now political foe, of committing a crime when he and his supporters broke through a border cordon and entered Ukraine on Sept. 10.

“This is a state security issue,” Poroshenko said in a video address. “I don’t care who breaks the state border: fighters in the east, or politicians in the west. There should be direct legal accountability.”

Ukraine’s police have opened a criminal investigation into Saakashvili and his supporters for illegally crossing Ukraine’s border, the country’s interior minister, Arsen Avakov, said in a post on his Facebook page on Sept. 11.

    • laker48

Too little and too late. Poroshenko has totally failed as a political strategist. He’s already lost this battle that may make or brake his efforts to win the second term as President.

  • Ihor Dawydiak

From a totally neutral standpoint it could be said that both Saakashvili and Poroshenko deserve blame for exacerbating a political dispute into a national embarrassment. For his part, Saakashvili has used crass opportunism to advance his own version of populism and political agenda by using unsubstantiated rumors or allegations leveled against the Ukrainian President. As for Poroshenko and especially in his role as President of Ukraine, he should have known better than to use Soviet styled antics in trying to suppress the voice and influence of his opponent. In any case, the dispute involving both of these individuals will likely end up not just in a Ukrainian court, but the hearings and the verdict will also be carefully scrutinized by experts in law as well as the general public. However, there remains another option. If both of these adversaries were to use a calm and logical approach to try and resolve their differences to the best of their ability instead of using vanity and overheated emotions, then they could put an end to their “tempest in a teapot”. As such, both Ukraine and its people are faced with much more serious issues such as the war with Russia. Petty political distractions should be avoided as they do not serve the interests of the nation.

Ruthenia is Rus, thanks for confirming. Moscow princes became the sovereigns of “all the Rus”, word “Ukraine” was not used, but those lands were called mala Russ (small Rus) – Malorossiya. Used for centuries, even used by Taras Shevchenko.

    • laker48

Saakashvili went there to prevent another Maidan from happening. Popularity of Hroysman and Poroshenko as well as their party among Ukrainians has already plummeted to single percentage points, so gas princess Tymoshenko and her party, in coalition with Saakashvili’s movement, may win the next year parliamentary election and Tymoshenko may unsaddle Poroshenko in the presidential election. The real tornado in Ukrainian politics has just started and the elephant in the room is US president Trump whose signature is needed to ship Javelin antitank missiles to Ukraine. He will likely sign the bill if Saakashvili comes back to Ukrainian politics.

      • ak47

Prevent another maidan? Why? Isn’t it such a marvelous thing that has done wonders to ukraine? The terrorist stated of scumerica love staging them anywhere they can from Europe to Middle East. Look at the prosperity, peace and democracy in the recipient states of Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, Ukraine. Haven’t the first two maidans have helped reach ukraine the dizzy heights of being the poorest and most corrupt and rapidly depopulating country in Europe? Why stop at two?
As for javelin, crapalin, they are only good in Hollywood films against invading alien tripods. Well, even then only occasionally. The marauding ukranian nazi battalion hordes shelling residential areas in Donbass will sell them to the Donbass self defence the next day just as they have done with most things they had. So Medvedev’s desire to hang Saak by his balls after he slaughtered sleeping civilians and Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia in 2008 after all may come to materialise. What colour tie do you reckon Saak will chew this time?

This is the beginning of the end of the Poroshenko kleptocracy. This is also a stab in the hearts of Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin. Saakashvili’s position is getting stronger by the day and he’s got full support of a former Ukrainian martyr, billionaire gas princess Yulia Tymoshenko. She’s one of the brightest business and political leaders in Ukraine, a fierce fighter and anti-RuSSian to the core as is Saakashvili. Poroshenko won’t stand the slimmest chance to cheat during the next year’s elections, as all kinds of EU, Canadian and American monitors will roam Ukraine freely after it signed and implemented the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement. It’s now in Poroshenko’s best interest to make sure that anything bad doesn’t happen to Saakashvili as long as he stays on Ukrainian territory.

    Meanwhile in Ukrainian circus :
Ветеран АТО Юрій Дмитренко переказав розмови про дружбу з Росією, які вели при ньому пасажири потягу “Херсон-Одеса”.

Про це він написав на своїй сторінці в Facebook.
