Poroshenko: Ukraine will never again celebrate February 23

“We will honor the defenders of our Fatherland, not someone else’s.”

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated Ukraine will never again commemorate February 23 as “Day of the Defender of the Fatherland.” He made this announcement on the Maidan square during Independence Day celebrations:

“The phrase ‘Defender of the Fatherland’ has ceased to be a mere abstract and ritualistic expression. Now it has acquired a concrete significance… In the rich and varied history of Ukrainian armies, there are countless battles and dates worthy of being elevated to a Day of the Defender of the Fatherland. I repeat: Ukraine will never again commemorate this holiday by following a historical battles calendar of a neighboring country. We will honor defenders of our Fatherland, not a foreign country’s!”

“The events of the past months have become for us a very real, although undeclared, war. Perhaps it will enter the history books as the 2014 War for the Fatherland – a war against foreign aggression, a war to defend Ukraine, its freedoms, its honor and glory, its peoples, its independence.”

It is to be noted that a military parade took place in  Kyiv. All vehicles and equipment then immediately moved out for the Anti Terror Operations zone.

It might seem the answer, but it’s not–then we would be exactly the same as they are. Ukraine must be a normal democratic country of laws. Trials, with competent defense attorneys, and release or appropriate punishment.

About time that Ukraine starts celebrating it’s own heroes. Nice to see more and more Lenins being relegated to the scrap heap. Slava Ukrayini!

In eastern Ukraine, the terrorists have billed themselves as the “defenders,” and Russian TV has characterized them this way too. It is a moniker that has been picked up by their supporters in the east. It amazes me that they have any support at all, but they do (though its numbers are waning exponentially). The term defender has thus become so distorted, like all that Russia touches, it should be dropped altogether.

Maybe its because I was born in UK, my father often told me stories of back home in Ukraine, I just assumed everyone in Ukraine had same thoughts as him.. but no.

It often amazed me after all that had been done to our people they still kept statues of the people reasonable for all that death and corruption of our culture

Execution for ALL rebel commanders captured, ban the Communist Party of Ukraine and trial for ALL defectors and former law enforcement people who allowed in the beginning of 2014 the Eastern Ukraine take over of public buildings and facilities…MARTIAL LAW NOW!

    • Skip Waterhouse

Execution? Wouldn’t work, Charly–we want them to surrender and be tried, otherwise the’d fight and kill to the end. Also, we want a free Ukraine–like in the US, this means all parties are legal. I do agree that the police situation does call for intense investigation and trial.
