Russia hit Ukraine with a combined missile and drone strike overnight, with Kyiv as the main direction, the Air Force reported. The strike — one of the war's largest air attacks — came on the heels of a daytime drone wave. A section of a 9-story Kyiv apartment block was destroyed, with multiple other regions also hit.

Russia has steadily expanded its air war on Ukrainian civilians since 2022, even as its ground advances slow. Moscow launches 100-200 long-range drones most nights, targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Yesterday saw an unusual 753-drone daytime attack, followed by last night's combined assault.

In Kharkiv, a Shahed drone hit the city's Osnovianskyi district, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia also targeted energy infrastructure in central Ukraine's Kremenchuk, as well as port and residential areas in Chornomorsk.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba listed the oblasts of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Poltava, and Zaporizhzhia among the regions struck.
One of the war's largest combined attacks
Ukraine's Air Force says Russia fired 56 missiles and 675 strike drones at Ukraine in the overnight assault. The attack began at 18:00 on 13 May and continued into the morning. The missile salvo included 3 Kh-47 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles launched from Russia's Lipetsk Oblast. Russia also fired 18 Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles from Bryansk and Kursk. Another 35 Kh-101 cruise missiles came from Russia's Vologda Oblast.
Among the drones were Iranian-designed Shaheds, Russian-made Gerberas, Italmas drones, Banderol loitering munitions, and Parodiia decoys. Ukraine's air defenses shot down or suppressed 693 targets — 41 missiles and 652 drones. Fifteen missiles and 23 drones still hit 24 locations across the country. Drone debris also crashed at 18 locations.
The overnight strike alone exceeded several of the war's worst combined attacks. Russia used 619 drones and 47 missiles on 24 April, and 653 drones and 51 missiles on 6 December 2025. On 30 October 2025, Russia deployed 653 drones and 52 missiles. A drone-heavy assault on 7 September 2025 used 810 drones with 13 missiles.
The 14 May overnight strike brought 731 weapons in one window. With the earlier daytime drone wave, the 24-hour total of Russian drones used exceeded 1,400.
The damage to Kyiv's left-bank water supply fits a pattern Zelenskyy warned about in March. The aim, according to parallel official assessments, was to create systemic problems with water supply for civilian communities.
Update, 16:50
The death toll from Russia's overnight attack on Kyiv on 14 May has risen to 8, with about 20 people still missing under rubble in the Darnytskyi and Obolonskyi districts.
A 12-year-old girl is among the dead. Rescuers pulled her body from a destroyed apartment building in Darnytskyi, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported around 40 wounded in the capital and 7 more in Kyiv Oblast.
Russia damaged more than 180 sites across Ukraine, including over 50 residential buildings. Search-and-rescue operations continue in both Kyiv districts.
President Zelenskyy held a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
"In total, across the waves of massive attacks on 13 and 14 May, the Russians used 1,567 drones and 56 missiles of various types. Our drone interception rate was 94%. The missile interception rate was 73%. The key challenge is ballistic missiles and the protection of thousands of rear-area infrastructure facilities and our cities," Zelenskyy wrote.
The President noted:
"I have instructed Ukraine's Defense Forces and the special services to propose possible formats for our response to this Russian strike."
