Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Rugienė confirmed Tuesday that the drone that crossed the country's airspace Monday and crashed in Varėna district was Ukrainian, according to Delfi.
"Today we can say that the drone that crossed our airspace and entered Varėna district was Ukrainian," Rugienė said. "This is connected to the operation that Ukrainians conducted that night against Russia" — specifically, the attack on the oil terminal in Primorsk.
The drone crashed and exploded after entering Lithuanian territory. Rugienė said it had gone off course during the Ukrainian operation.
Rugienė noted it was too early to identify the type of drone. "The answer to this question will be provided in the course of the investigation, which is ongoing," she said.
Lithuania's Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas had earlier indicated the drone was likely Ukrainian and also connected it to the strike on the oil refinery in Primorsk, Leningrad Oblast.
Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys used the incident to call for reinforcement of Lithuania's air defense system. He did not elaborate on specific measures.
