Ukraine's 24th Separate Assault Regiment Aidar reported that six individuals attacked its servicemembers in a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on 21 February, with one of the assailants using a firearm.
According to Aidar, the soldiers were off duty at the time of the incident — they "were not performing official duties, were attending to personal matters, did not provoke anyone, and took no actions against other persons."
"The attack was committed without any grounds," the regiment said.
Despite being fired upon, the servicemembers did not use their weapons, Aidar added.
The regiment issued a pointed warning in response: "Attacking military personnel is dangerous and irresponsible. These are trained, experienced assault troops who have every legal right to defend themselves in case of a threat."
Created in May 2014 as the 24th Territorial Defense Battalion Aidar at the start of the war in eastern Ukraine. It was named after the Aidar River in Luhansk Oblast where it was initially deployed.
Many of its first members were Euromaidan activists, including volunteers from the "Maidan Self-Defense" militias and the Right Sector.
The unit went through several reorganizations — reformed into an assault battalion in September 2014, then placed under the 10th Mountain Brigade in 2015, transferred to the 53rd Mechanized Brigade in 2016, and moved to the newly formed 5th Assault Brigade after the full-scale invasion in 2022.In 2025, the battalion left the 5th Assault Brigade structure, and in late 2025 was expanded to regiment size.
