Borrell: EU mission to train Ukrainian military to be extended for two years

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on 14 October that Europe will extend the mandate of the EU Training Mission for the Ukrainian military for the next two years.

According to the European Pravda, the decision was made when ministers met on 14 October to discuss extending the EU Training Mission (EUMAM) for Ukrainian military personnel.

The EU Training Mission (EUMAM) for Ukraine is a program established by the European Union in October 2022 to provide training for Ukrainian military personnel. The mission primarily operates in Poland and Germany, offering instruction to Ukrainian servicemen to enhance their capabilities in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Borrell emphasized the pressing need for this extension, saying that the “Ukrainian Armed Forces are under great pressure along the entire front line,” which has expanded compared to early summer.

The top EU diplomat also addressed the issue of blocked funds from the European Peace Facility, which are used to reimburse member states for military aid provided to Ukraine. Borrell said the EU has “almost reached” unblocking, though he could not make a specific decision.

Borrell promised to visit Ukraine after the necessary decision was made. He said that this would occur before the end of his mandate.

Borrell previously said that the EU did not support EUMAM activities on Ukrainian territory but agreed to conduct training as close to Ukrainian borders to maximize effectiveness.
