Leaked documents indicate Navalny may have been poisoned before death in prison

Journalists have obtained access to “hundreds” of documents related to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which suggest a possible poisoning of the political prisoner, according to The Insider.

Navalny was imprisoned in 2021 and sentenced to over 20 years following multiple trials. In February 2024, he died in prison. The Russian opposition believes his death was the result of deliberate assassination, while Russian authorities claimed he died because of a heart rhythm disorder.

“The Insider gained access to hundreds of official documents related to Alexei Navalny’s death at the ‘Polar Wolf’ correctional facility. These documents indicate that authorities deliberately removed mentions of symptoms from his case that did not align with the official narrative. According to doctors, these symptoms clearly suggest Navalny was poisoned,” the report writes.

According to The Insider, the documents contained two versions of a decision refusing to open a criminal case. Notably, the second and final version omitted references to Navalny experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, and convulsions before his death.

This same information appears in another document describing “seized items,” which included “samples of vomit.”

The document indicates that the samples were sent for examination, although there had previously been no mention of either the test or Navalny’s nausea.

Russian authorities announce Alexei Navalny’s death in prison

Alexander Polupan, the anesthesiologist who treated Navalny after his poisoning with Novichok in August 2020 in Omsk, commented on the documents. He stated that the symptoms indicate poisoning by an organophosphorus compound.

The journalists said that these documents confirm the statements of Yulia Navalnaya, his wife, who earlier claimed that shortly before his death, Navalny complained of sharp abdominal pain.
