Opposition leaders said that they signed an agreement with President Viktor Yanukovych so that no more people died in armed clashes and so that Ukraine would not become divided.
“We signed the agreement so that the country wouldn’t become divided… so that we could save people’s lives… so that we could save our country,” Arseniy Yatseniuk told journalists as he left the Presidential Administration building. According to him, this agreement “entails early elections, Yanukovych loses his dictatorial powers, and there will be an international investigation.”
“Of course, this agreement isn’t enough. But it’s a first step in bringing about a peaceful resolution,” said Yatseniuk.
When asked how long Maidan would still stand, he said, “Maidan is the guarantee that the agreement will be carried out, Maidan is the people’s will. And when people feel that injustice prevails in the country, they will take action.”
When asked a follow-up question on whether or not people will have to stay until December, when the elections allegedly could be scheduled, Yatseniuk said that there is no trust in the President – thus the Europeans have become the agreement’s guarantors.
He hopes that Maidan will accept the signing of the agreement and won’t attack state institutions, which would go against the Maidan Council’s resolution passed February 18.
