Russian missile likely entered the airspace of NATO-member Poland on 29 December, General Maciej Klisz, the operational commander of Polish armed forces, said.
Earlier, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that Polish Operational Command detected an unknown object that flew in from Ukrainian territory near the Ukrainian border in the Zamość area of Poland.
This occurrence took place amid a significant Russian assault on Ukraine overnight, involving 158 drones and missiles targeting critical infrastructure, industry, and military facilities.
According to General Klisz, the missile spent less than three minutes over Polish territory before returning to Ukrainian airspace. “The entire flight path over Polish territory was being monitored,” Klisz stated to the press. “At the moment, the scenario that I am recommending is that the missile left Poland’s airspace.”
This incident follows a previous event in November 2022, where a stray Ukrainian missile struck Przewodow, a Polish village. In April, a Russian missile was discovered in a forest near Zamosc, close to Bydgoszcz.
General Klisz also noted that the missile had flown 40 kilometers into Poland, with no action taken against it. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened a meeting with army and security service chiefs around midday local time to discuss the incident.
According to Polsat News, citing sources, it was most likely either X-22 or X-101 Russian cruise missile.
