According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the academic year in the liberated cities of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts began as scheduled, on September 1. In particular, more than 200 first-grade pupils had their first lessons today in Sloviansk, a recent stronghold of Russia-backed terrorists.
Over the period of three weeks the military of the State Special Transport Service of Ukraine had repaired three schools and a kindergarten in Sloviansk. “The soldiers restored facades, repaired damaged premises, replaced doors, windows and glass, as well as put the exterior of schools damaged by terrorists in order,” stated speaker of Ukraine’s the National Security and Defense Council Andriy Lysenko.
The city of Lysychansk in the Luhansk Oblast which was liberated from terrorists a month ago is also recovering from the fighting. 8 out of 22 schools were damaged heavily there. Now they have been restored, except for one which is supposed to be repaired in two weeks.
However, the new academic year has not started in the areas, still controlled by Russian military and Russia-backed terrorists. Due to the purposeful anti-Ukrainian actions of Russians and their mercenaries more than 900 schools in the Donbas could not take students on September 1. This means that about 10 thousand Ukrainian schoolchildren are not able to start the academic year today because of Russia’s invasion.
